Muesli recall at Meienburg: Ethylene oxide banned in Germany - but still to be found

The possibly health-endangering goods were sold in various supermarkets nationwide and should not be consumed under any circumstances.

What is the

disinfectant ethylene oxide all

about?

The substance is used in the production of food to reduce germs and can cause serious damage to human health, including the risk of cancer.

It has been classified as harmful in the European Union since 1981.

In countries like India or Sudan, however, the chemical is still allowed and ends up in Europe as part of international trade.

The toxic, highly flammable gas is still often found in foods with

sesame seeds

,

for example

.

For the same reason, another German manufacturer recently had to initiate a muesli recall - Allos Manufaktur, also based in Northern Germany.
