The closer the vaccination against Covid-19, the less the French seem to want to be vaccinated: only half of those questioned in November intend to do so, against two-thirds in July, according to official figures unveiled by Public Health on Friday France.

“In November 2020, only half of those surveyed (53%) replied that they certainly or probably wanted to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

This result is down compared to the month of July when 64% said they intended to do so, ”writes the health agency in its weekly update.

These data come from the CoviPrev survey, surveys regularly carried out by Public Health France on a sample of 2,000 adults in mainland France.

Only a third of 25-34 year olds want to do it

"Men, CSP + and the oldest people are the most likely to be vaccinated", continues Public Health France.

Among those over 65, a particularly high-risk category, three-quarters (72%) of those questioned replied that they would “certainly or probably” be vaccinated.

But only a third (33%) of 25-34 year olds intend to do so (compared to 46% of 18-24 year olds, 47% of 35-49 year olds and 58% of 50-64 year olds).

Why so many French anti-vaccines?

"It must be linked to mistrust of political authorities"

“In July 2020, among the 728 people (36%) who did not want to be vaccinated, the reasons cited most often for not doing so were:

new vaccines are not safe

(67%);

I prefer other means of prevention such as barrier gestures

(33%);

I am against vaccination in general

(18%) ”, according to the health agency, which does not specify the reasons given in November.

In addition, more than two-thirds (68%) of the liberal health professionals questioned wish to be vaccinated.

There are, however, "significant differences between professions": 8 out of 10 general practitioners and pharmacists intend to, against 55% of nurses questioned.

In addition, 88% of liberal health professionals surveyed would advise their patients to be vaccinated against Covid.

"We must first become immune to fears"

These figures showing reluctance in public opinion are a bad sign for the government, which on Thursday evening gave the first details on the vaccination campaign in France.

It will take place in three phases, starting with residents of nursing homes from the beginning of next January, before gradually extending to the entire population.

Coronavirus: the vaccine will be free for all French people

“Even before immunizing ourselves against the coronavirus, we must first immunize ourselves against fears”, underlined the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran.

"I am committed throughout the vaccination campaign to ensure that we demonstrate the most total transparency on the efficacy of the vaccine, acceptability of the population, the evolution of scientific and medical recommendations, the practical organization of the campaign, any undesirable effects, whether serious or mild, ”he insisted.
