After 57 years of space exploration, the Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico is history.

The once largest radio telescope in the world collapsed on Tuesday.

A 900-ton instrument platform fell more than 130 meters and left severe damage in the huge reflector bowl.

Nobody got hurt.

Scientists from all over the world have been using the telescope to receive radio waves from space.

Arecibo helped study planets, find extraterrestrial life and track down dangerous asteroids.

The building with a diameter of 305 meters became famous in 1995 as a film set: decisive stunt scenes from the James Bond film "GoldenEye" with Pierce Brosnan played in the radio telescope.

The Arecibo Observatory had taken the telescope out of operation in August.

At that time, a supporting steel cable tore and left a 30 meter hole in the main bowl.

After further damage, the responsible authorities decided in November that repairs were too dangerous.

The demolition of the telescope was already planned - and has now possibly accelerated.
