In Frankfurt am Main, the defusing of a bomb from the Second World War on St. Nicholas Day will lead to considerable restrictions.

Around 12,800 residents must have left their homes by 8 a.m. on Sunday, the authorities said.

Windows and doors must be kept closed as a precaution.

There are several old people's homes and district heating pipes in the affected area in the Gallus district.

According to the "hessenschau" there is also an internet hub in the evacuation area.

According to the authorities, the defusing could continue into the evening.

Restrictions in rail traffic

The substations of Deutsche Bahn and Frankfurt Central Station are also affected.

Travelers should therefore be prepared for long-distance and regional connections on Sunday for cancellations and diversions.

According to the railway, some ICE trains do not stop at the main station on Sunday, but instead at the south station.

ICEs from Frankfurt to Amsterdam or Brussels are completely canceled until Cologne.

All other IC / ICEs should stop as planned.

However, Deutsche Bahn advises you to check your own connection online and be prepared for longer travel times.

The corona pandemic presents the organizers of the mitigation campaign with particular challenges.

Residents who are currently in quarantine will be picked up by the health department and taken to suitable accommodation.

However, those who have voluntarily isolated themselves must leave their home independently.

Dud discovered during construction work

The 500 kilogram dud was found on a construction site on Thursday.

According to the fire brigade, an evacuation radius of 700 meters is necessary due to the amount of explosives and the design.

A detonation would mean massive damage and a great danger to life.

A care center with a corresponding hygiene concept is currently being set up at Messe Frankfurt for all residents who cannot find another place to stay.

It opens from 7 a.m.

The fire brigade has marked the evacuation area on a map on which residents can check whether they are affected.
