After criticism of the award of the title “Capital of Culture 2025” to Chemnitz, the federal states will now deal with it.
On request, Bavaria's Art Minister Bernd Sibler (CSU), as chairman of the conference of culture ministers, said on Wednesday that he would put the topic on the agenda when the culture and culture ministers' conference switched: »All applicant cities deserve a transparent process.
And the victorious city of Chemnitz has a right to bear its title without a doubt. "
The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" had previously reported on allegations against the award of the title to Chemnitz, according to which this was supposed to have come about under questionable circumstances within a network permeated by "grotesque conflicts of interest".
"In the 2025 competition, for example, a number of consultants worked for several competing German cities," it says.
A lack of transparency was complained.
The “Chemnitzer Morgenpost” in turn indicates that the author of the critical text lives in Nuremberg.
In addition to Chemnitz, Nuremberg, Hanover, Magdeburg and Hildesheim also applied for European Capital of Culture 2025.
The European Union always awards this title to two cities from two member countries at the same time.
Associated with this is funding of millions for cultural projects.
The city of Nuremberg asked the Kulturstiftung der Länder to clear up the allegations.
"The answer to the question about the independence and credibility of the jurors is of particular importance in view of the fact that persons in personal union as jurors and project contributors are represented in the application book of the title holder," announced the city.
