Corona while shopping: Virus lingers on smooth surfaces for a long time
Australian researchers have found that
coronaviruses
can survive on smooth surfaces for up to 28 days.
Nevertheless, virologists estimate the
risk of infection
via surfaces in everyday life to be rather low, according to a current article in the consumer
magazine Öko-Test
.
The main route of transmission of the coronavirus is namely the droplet infection via saliva, which is expelled when sneezing, coughing and speaking and not the contact or smear infection, for example via surfaces.
However
, there is still great
concern about
getting
infected
with the
corona
virus

shopping

Therefore, good hand hygiene after
shopping is
important, because in supermarkets you cannot avoid touching shopping trolleys and other surfaces.
In
addition, contact with other people in shops is difficult to avoid,
especially in the period before
Christmas
.
Therefore, always wash your hands before and after shopping and disinfect your hands as often as possible.
In this way, customers also prevent the transmission of other diseases.
So you are guaranteed not to lie in bed with a cold on Christmas Eve.
Shopping for Christmas: do your shopping early
This year in particular, shopping before
Christmas
could be particularly stressful due to the corona pandemic.
On the one hand, the stricter
corona
rules for retail
allow
significantly fewer customers, and on the other hand, the holidays are followed by a Sunday.
If you
buy
groceries
at the beginning of the Christmas week
, you have to stock up for at least four days.
In addition,
everyone has to cook
for
Christmas
this year
, as traditional restaurants are not possible on the holidays.

The experts at
Öko-Test
have therefore put together some tips on what consumers
should consider
when shopping before
Christmas
in times of
Corona
:
It is best to buy food that does not spoil before December 19th.
Think about what you can pre-buy and freeze.
Bread holds up wonderfully if you freeze it right after you buy it.
Some dishes can be pre-cooked without loss of quality and also stored in the freezer.
You can now easily order groceries online and have them delivered to your home.
Buy fresh products not only in the supermarket, but also at the weekly market or in specialist shops.
There is often less going on here.
It is best to go shopping alone rather than with the whole family.
Shopping in times of Corona: Consumers should observe these hygiene rules
In addition, the consumer experts from
Öko-Test give
some advice on which special hygiene rules consumers should pay attention to in supermarkets and other retail shops in order
to be able to do
their shopping before
Christmas
safely and securely
:
Draw up a shopping plan and think carefully about what you will need in the next few days.
So you don't have to go out every day.
Do not shop at peak times.
At lunchtime and shortly after work, the shops are usually particularly full.
If possible, keep the recommended safety distance of 1.5 meters.
Bring your own bag.
Only pick up unpackaged fruits and vegetables when you want to buy them.
As a precaution, you should avoid smell tests on fresh fruit.
During and after shopping, do not touch your face until you have washed your hands thoroughly.
Whenever possible, disinfect your hands after you put the shopping cart back.
In this way you will avoid transmitting viruses to the steering wheel of the car or the handlebars of the bicycle.
At home, the first thing you should do is wash your hands thoroughly.
Two are better than one: it is best to wash your hands again after clearing out the shopping bags.
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consuming.
