(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, DECEMBER 19 - Well-informed sources in Brussels report that technical discussions are underway on the post-Brexit negotiation between the EU and the UK, with the fishing dossier considered the main obstacle, even if it is not the only one.
The French Minister for European Affairs, Clément Beaune, declared that he did not rule out that the final negotiations underway between the EU and Great Britain on Brexit will continue beyond Sunday, despite the fact that the European Parliament has made it known that it wants a text by 20 December.
"It is normal not to say 'listen, it's Sunday evening we stop here and throw away everything we have done'. We will not, because entire sectors are at stake, such as fishing, the conditions of competition for our companies in the long term" , the French minister told France Inter.
The European Parliament, for its part, has warned that it wants an agreement by "midnight on Sunday" to revise it and ratify it so that it can enter into force on 1 January, once the divorce with the United Kingdom is final.
"I know it is difficult, that it is sometimes complicated to understand, but we need to take this time and not sacrifice our interests for a deadline," Beaune insisted.
