In 2020, due to Covid with a drop in consumption of 10.8% (equal to a loss of 120 billion euros on 2019), the definitive closure of more than 390 thousand non-food trade and service businesses is estimated in the face of 85 thousand new openings.

Therefore, the reduction of companies in these sectors would be almost 305 thousand companies (-11.3%).

The assessment is by Confcommercio which processed the Movimprese Unioncamere data.

According to the Confcommercio Studies Office, of the 240 thousand companies that disappeared from the market due to the pandemic - the note continues - 225 thousand are lost due to an excess of mortality and 15 thousand due to a birth deficit.

A reduction in the productive fabric that is particularly accentuated among market services, which decreased by 13.8% compared to 2019, while in commerce it remains more contained, but still high, and equal to 8.3%.

Among the most affected sectors, in the field of commerce, clothing and footwear (-17.1%), street vendors (-11.8%) and petrol stations (-10.1%);

on the other hand, in market services, the greatest losses of businesses were recorded for travel agencies (-21.7%), bars and restaurants (-14.4%) and transport (-14.2%).

Then there is the whole chain of free time which, between artistic, sporting and entertainment activities, has registered a real collapse with the disappearance of one in three companies.


The loss of businesses - concludes the note - must then also be added to the loss relating to self-employed workers, ie those subjects with a VAT number operating without any type of corporate organization.

It is estimated that about 200,000 professionals, including ordinaries and non-ordinaries, operating in professional, scientific and technical activities, administration and services, artistic activities, entertainment and fun and more are estimated to be closed.
