Vaccination campaigns continued this week in full force in several countries around the world, including Israel.

As of this writing, some six million people worldwide have been vaccinated.

About 84 percent of them received the mRNA vaccines from the companies Pfizer and Moderna, about 800,000 of them in Israel alone.

In the first stage, the vaccine is given mainly to medical staff, at-risk populations such as those aged 60 and over, people suffering from chronic diseases and the lucky ones who received the remaining doses at the end of the day.

This is a good start, but packet availability is expected to decline in the near future as more and more countries start vaccinating their citizens and demand increases.

The companies produce of course at maximum output, but to meet the huge global demand more companies must cross the finish line and get approval to distribute the vaccines they are developing.

Many countries are still hesitant to approve the Chinese vaccine and the Russian vaccine, which were approved for use in their countries even before the third phase of clinical trials, designed to test the vaccine's effectiveness and safety on a large scale and discover most of its side effects.

After many weeks of media hints, the UK was the first country to approve the use of the Astra-Zenica vaccine, developed in collaboration with Oxford University.

The company has developed a vaccine based on a harmless virus for humans, from the adenovirus family, which has undergone a treatment that deprives it of the ability to infect other people.

In this case, they took a chimpanzee virus and cloned the gene for the spike protein that allows the corona virus to enter human cells.

The engineered virus injects its genetic material into the cells of the vaccine recipients and forces them to produce the protein, similar to Pfizer and Modernena vaccines, thus allowing the immune system to learn to recognize the viral protein.

Had the initial findings of the trial been published a few weeks earlier, Astraznica would have won much praise, as it reached an efficiency of 62 percent - well above the 50 percent threshold set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a condition for approving corona virus vaccines.

But when compared to the success rate of mRNA vaccines, which has reached 95 percent, the new vaccine suddenly looks much less impressive.

However, it should not be forgotten that the amount of doses is limited and that 62 percent efficacy is preferable to the lack of a vaccine, especially if the vaccine also reduces the disease severity of those who have nevertheless contracted it.

The UK is currently experiencing a particularly large wave of morbidity that includes a slightly different virus and is more contagious than its predecessor, which is probably why it has preferred to approve a vaccine with limited efficacy over continuing the existing condition.

Meanwhile, the Modern Company has also published the findings of its clinical trials in a peer-reviewed scientific paper.

There were no surprises compared to the first report published a few weeks ago, but now their clinical study has been officially added to the scientific literature.

The Chinese are finally revealing data

The Chinese company SinoPharm, which has developed a vaccine based on killed viruses, has released the intermediate results from the third phase of its clinical trials.

According to the data, the effectiveness of the vaccine is about 79 percent with relatively few side effects - less than a thousand of the vaccinated have developed a mild fever, and only two out of a million vaccinated have suffered serious side effects.

Following this, the Chinese government approved the distribution of the vaccine to a wider audience.

The Chinese vaccine is based on classical technology and is common in many childhood vaccines, for example the killed polio vaccine.

However, SinoPharm's statements have been received with suspicion in the scientific community due to the lack of transparency of the Chinese so far.

Apart from China, the vaccine has also been approved for use in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and a large shipment that arrived in Indonesia indicates that it is next in line.

One of the public concerns is that vaccines have unknown side effects, as these are new vaccines that have been developed in a short time.

To that end, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States (CDC) has set up a venture called V-Safe that encourages vaccinators to report any abnormal side effects they experience.

While this is not as close supervision as in clinical trials, abnormal side effects should arise as well.

In addition, the Israeli Ministry of Health published a list of side effects reported since the start of the vaccination campaign.

652 out of more than half a million vaccinated reported side effects, of which 51 required medical attention and 35 went to emergency rooms.

It is likely that not all mild side effects are reported, but the small number of side effects that require medical attention is encouraging.

Several people died near the time of vaccination, and after an examination by the Ministry of Health, the connection between the vaccine and the cause of death was ruled out.

Due to the wide scope of the vaccination campaign, which focuses mainly on at-risk populations, there is a high probability of a close relationship between a life-threatening event and the receipt of the vaccine.

However it is important to examine each case individually.
