Covid-19: the government targets 400,000 people vaccinated in mid-January

Acceleration in nursing homes, opening of vaccination centers… The pace of the vaccination campaign is accelerating, according to the objectives

Vaccinate 262,000 people against Covid-19 within five days, when the first 138,000 French people were vaccinated over 17 days, mission impossible?

The government does not hear it that way.

It has set itself the goal of reaching 400,000 people vaccinated in France by the end of the week, according to the Minister Delegate in charge of Autonomy, Brigitte Bourguignon.

Monday evening, the Ministry of Health announced the vaccination of more than 138,000 people in France among residents of Ehpads and health professionals.

"We will continue on this line to perhaps even reach 400,000 at the end of the week", declared Brigitte Bourguignon on the Public Senate channel.

The government, which expects 2.6 million doses received by the end of January, has changed its strategy by opening up vaccination to all health professionals over 50 years old or frail, as well as to home helpers and firefighters.

“This has had the effect of boosting the figures for a few days,” observes Brigitte Bourguignon.

A national awareness campaign planned

Objective now: to speed up the pace in nursing homes and senior residences, where only 30,000 people have so far received their first dose out of a target of around one million recipients.

“Theoretically, we had set ourselves to vaccinate (this) million residents for the month of January.

We must boost, ”continued the minister, setting“ the goal that at the end of January all nursing home residents who so wish can be vaccinated ”.

Vaccination centers should multiply on the territory.

“There are 200 for the moment, there will be 350 at the end of the week, and 600 at the end of the month,” explains Brigitte Bourguignon.

A "national campaign to raise awareness about vaccination" does not seem to exclude, judging the minister, who deplores the reluctance of "those who are still skeptical, in particular the nursing staff".

According to Brigitte Bourguignon, only "20% of staff accept vaccination" in nursing homes.
