The Covid-19 still weighs as heavily on the French health system, with 1995 coronavirus patients admitted within 24 hours.

The toll of the epidemic, which passed the 70,000 dead mark on Saturday, continues to increase on Tuesday.

The health authorities thus identify 373 new deaths which have occurred in hospital in the last 24 hours, against 404 the day before.

In social and medico-social establishments, 287 patients have died from Covid-19 since last Friday, also indicates Public Health France.

In total, the coronavirus has killed 71,342 people in the country since the start of the epidemic.

315 new intensive care admissions

The pressure on the hospital system is still strong.

2,829 patients are taken care of in the intensive care units, which welcome patients with the most serious forms of Covid-19.

That's 26 more than the day before and 315 new admissions in 24 hours.

After having fallen sharply since the peak in mid-November, to 4,880 people in intensive care, this figure had stabilized around 2,600 patients since the end of December, but has been rising steadily for a week.

On Monday, it crossed the 2800 mark for the first time since mid-December.

In total, 25,532 people positive for the coronavirus are hospitalized in France - 52 less than on Monday - including 1995 new hospitalizations.

Nearly 586,000 people vaccinated

Some 23,608 new contaminations were recorded in 24 hours, against 3,736 on Monday.

The number of infections has risen in recent weeks to a high plateau of around 15,000 per day, while the vaccination campaign has only just begun.

According to the latest figures provided on Tuesday by the Ministry of Health, 585,664 people have been vaccinated in France since the start of the campaign on December 27.
