From January 19,

Milan becomes a trailblazer for smoke-free Italian cities

, starting

a path towards total cessation of smoking even in outdoor public areas

.

Many countries - Sweden among the most stringent in Europe - have long since undertaken a series of actions aimed at improving air quality by banning smoking, starting from the most crowded places such as bus stops and playgrounds.

It has now been

18 years

since, on January 16, 2003, the Italian Parliament passed the anti-smoking law which

banned the consumption of cigarettes in closed rooms

.

The application arrived two years later, freeing bars, cinemas, restaurants and offices from perennial clouds of smoke.

Are Italians ready for this green turn?

To understand their relationship with smoking, Trovaprezzo.it analyzed the research carried out between April and December 2020, comparing them with the data recorded the previous year.

In general, 2020 brought a

decrease in interest in the sector

(-3.8% compared to 2019), albeit with a total of over 165 thousand searches in the macro category dedicated to items for smokers.

August and December were the two months in which a sharp decline was perceived: - 40% in December compared to the same month of 2019 and -27% in August (2020 vs 2019).

Electronic cigarettes deserve a separate chapter.

While the world is wondering about the effects of these devices on human health (there are already many states that have banned or limited their use), the Milanese are wondering if the upcoming measures will also affect e-cigarettes.

From the analysis of the online research of Trovaprezzo.it it emerges that the over 65s are not interested in the online purchase of items for smokers, while

electronic cigarettes are increasingly fashionable among young people

(18-44 years) who total 100% of searches.

Users between 45 and 64 years old searched the web for accessories and products exclusively dedicated to "traditional" smokers.

In the gender difference, men far surpass women as regards the habit of smoking

: 76% against 24% for electronic cigarettes and 74% against 26% for “traditional” accessories for smokers.

What are the online products that have attracted the attention of Italians the most?

Analyzing the top 30 researches of 2020, those of the GLO (over 2 thousand searches) and IQOS (about 1.5 thousand) brands emerge among the most desired e-cigarette models.

Even those who use modern devices such as electronic cigarettes prefer traditional flavors: next to neutral bases (with or without nicotine) the most sought-after liquids have

aromas and aftertaste of tobacco

(among the most desired the Mexico and Calliope by DEA).

Among the “classic” accessories for smokers, attention was focused on

do-it-yourself products: papers

(about 12 thousand searches)

and filters

(over 5 thousand) of various sizes.
