In the year of the pandemic, opposition to organ donation in the registration of citizens' wishes through identity cards issued by municipalities increased.
In 2020, 33.6% of registrants said no to donation, the highest percentage ever (they were 32.5% in 2019).
The refusal is mainly recorded by the over 60s, while the propensity to donate is higher among young adults (between 30-40 years old the consent is 75%).
It is women who are more generous, with an opposition firm at 29.8% against 32.2% of men.
This is highlighted by the 2020 Report of the National Transplant Center Cnt.
According to the NTC, one of the reasons for the growth of the opposition is that there continues to be little information to citizens on this front.
In general, moreover, in 2020 the registrations of the will - in favor or against - to donation globally decreased: the declarations issued to the municipalities totaled 1,960,705 while the previous year had been over 2.4 million.
In total, there are almost 9 million declarations in the Transplant Information System to date, of which over 6.5 million consents.
To weigh, in this decline, was the closure of the registry services during the first lockdown and the decision of the government to extend the expiry of the old identity documents.
