PALERMO - The images of the cannolo and the Sicilian passito were embossed on the five euro coins that are part of the new 2021 numismatic collection coined by the Mint and presented today in the Mint museum in Rome by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The collection consists of 15 subjects inspired by history, art, sport, science, nature and Italian food and wine excellences that can be purchased on the e-commerce portal of the Italian Mint, as well as in the points of sale of the Poligrafico and Zecca dello Stato from 26 January.

The themes of this edition "want to represent a feeling of national unity and cohesion that finds expression in the celebration of personalities, historical events and artists, symbol of our tradition and our entrepreneurial culture, but also in gratitude towards those who, in the last year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, he has unreservedly put his professionalism at the service of the community ", say the promoters of the initiative.

The homage to the Sicilian food and wine tradition is dedicated to two symbols of cuisine and oenology.

The cannolo consisting of a fried dough wafer (called scòrza) and a filling made with sheep's milk ricotta is a dessert included in the list of traditional Italian agri-food products of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

According to historians, the first to mention it was even Cicero, in 70 BC who, during a trip to Sicily, was fascinated by a "Tubus farinarius dulcissimo edulio ex lacte fartus", or a tube of flour filled with soft milk cream .

The passito is a wine obtained from grapes subjected to dehydration processes, more or less advanced.

The most famous Italian liqueur is undoubtedly the Pantelleria Doc version obtained from the Zibibbo sapling vine.
