It is a strategy that contrasts with that of its European neighbors. Despite the rise in contagions, Spain authorizes establishments

“I applaud with all my soul the great effort that is being made in this country to defend culture, because music prevails, because it is also more than necessary for the heart of the human being.

At the Royal Theater in Madrid, the Mexican tenor Javier Camarena thanks the 1,200 spectators who came to listen to him that evening.

Authorized to open since June, many cultural establishments have decided to continue their activity despite the pandemic and at the cost of certain investments.

Thermal camera, spectators spaced by a seat… The Royal Theater has invested nearly a million euros to enforce the health protocol.

"The activity of the Royal Theater produces a margin of around 4 million euros per year," Joan Matabosch, artistic director of the theater, told AFP.

If we take a million out of it, it's still very, very beneficial, so it makes perfect sense to open the theater, really.

And I would dare say that even if we lost money, it would still make sense to open up.

Subject to a curfew and a limited gauge, bars and restaurants are also allowed to open in most of the country.

Despite a significant increase in contagions this week with nearly 35,000 cases recorded on average each day, the Spanish government refuses to establish a new containment.

The curfew was, however, brought forward to 10 p.m. instead of 11 p.m., in the particularly affected region of Madrid.
