(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 26 - Tens of thousands of Indian peasants invaded New Delhi with tractors, horses, motorcycles or walkers in a protest that, coinciding with the national holiday of Republic Day, did not respect the routes agreed with the police, generating confrontations, scuffles and causing extensive damage.

The peasants, who for weeks have consolidated sit-ins in the suburbs of the federal capital, are protesting against an agricultural reform wanted by the Narendra Modi government that provides for the liberalization of the agricultural market: the end of the governmental protection on prices and services that many farmers can bring to the massive private industry in the sector, to the detriment of their incomes.

The protest was allowed as long as it remained confined to some peripheral areas of the capital and did not disturb the military forces and city traffic.

But immediately, although the majority of the peasants with tractors respected the deliveries, some sections of the protest turned into side streets, blocking streets and squares, and aimed decisively towards the center.

The police intervened in various places with charges, fire hydrants and tear gas.

Several subway stations were closed and traffic quickly became congested.
