Italy: at 98, she defeats the Covid and discovers 475,000 euros hidden at home

This nonagenarian Italian residing in the Roman district of Prenestino has, in the space of a month, not only defeated the Covid-19 but also discovered a treasure of 475,000 euros, hidden in her home.

This story of Christmas after the hour is told a month later by the Italian national daily "Il Corriere de la Sera".

Suffering from the coronavirus in November, Maria G. is forced to stay at her home.

First sign of a chance that never leaves her: the old lady is in good shape, suffering only from a mild form of the virus.

To kill time, she sets off with her daughter in a big household and then discovers, stuck in the typewriter, a 50 million lire coupon issued by the Italian Post Office on January 13, 1986.

The value of the coupon reaches, in 2021, 475,000 euros.

The existence of the little piece of paper had, according to Corriere, escaped Maria's memory.

The daily reports that her husband, now deceased, had decided in January 1986 to invest money in a postal check and to hide it in a typewriter.

The story would have been too good without some pitfalls.

Errors in the appreciation of the interest rates of the time led the Italian Post to pay "only" 200,000 euros to the almost centenary.

“This is a flawed calculation because the interest rates that have followed over the years have to be applied.

The exact figure is almost double, 475 thousand euros, ”said the president of a consumer association.

Maria's relatives have appealed to justice.

The result of the verdict, expected by March, "is taken for granted", the daily said.

The expected sum should indeed be 19 times greater than the initial amount displayed on the coupon.
