Dozens of people said goodbye to ten-year-old Antonella in the streets of the Italian city of Palermo.
The girl allegedly died last week after a test of courage on the TikTok social media app.
"Antonella's death is a warning and a call to all of us," said Archbishop Corrado Lorefice at the funeral service.
The pandemic made the children more fragile and fearful, the Ansa news agency quoted the clergy as saying.
Before the funeral, people raised white balloons into the sky and set off fireworks.
TikTok in the criticism
The girl's tragic death caused a sensation all over Italy.
The ten-year-old is said to have initially strangled herself unconscious for a test of courage known as the “Blackout Challenge” or “Hanging Challenge” on the Tiktok social network.
In the hospital, the doctors then determined that the girl was brain dead.
The case brought TikTok into criticism.
Italy's data protection supervisory authority called, among other things, to block all accounts on the social network for which the age is not known.
The app is actually only allowed for people aged 13 and over.
Tiktok said they were looking into the process.
