It is nothing short of a sensation: a rare Sumatran rhinoceros, an endangered species, has seen the light of day in an Indonesian protected area. The mother, Delilah, gave birth to a male calf weighing 25 kilograms in the Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra. A conservationist discovered the newborn calf next to its mother on Saturday. The birth of Sumatran rhinos, which are critically endangered, is a rare occurrence. In 2021, Andatu, the first Sumatran rhino in over 120 years, was born in an Indonesian protected area. This was announced by Siti Nurbaya Bakar, the Indonesian Minister of the Environment, according to dpa on November 27. "This birth is already the second birth of a Sumatran rhino in 2023," she added.
The population of Sumatran rhinos has declined sharply, mainly due to poaching and the destruction of their habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered.
Not so rare, but just as cute: a naked-nosed wombat baby
A few weeks ago, a baby wombat was born at the Hanover Adventure Zoo. Just a few days ago, it left mommy's protective pouch, the zoo reports on its Facebook page. Still a little cautiously, the offspring explores the big, wide world. Always by his side: Mama Maya. The sex of the cub is not yet entirely clear.
