2023 was a very good year for French historical monuments. The Centre for National and International Monuments (CMN), the institution responsible for managing more than 100 historic sites and gardens across the country, reveals that our country's monuments have seen record attendance over the past year.
No less than 11 million visitors visited France's major heritage sites, an increase of 15% compared to 2022. "We have already far surpassed last year's attendance record. We are following a very good trajectory," commented the president of the CMN, Marie Lavandier, to BFM Business.

Eiffel Tower excluded from ranking
This is followed by the Pantheon (980th arrondissement), which is close to one million visitors (000,13) with an increase of 594%, and the Castle and the ramparts of the city of Carcassonne with its 990,23 visitors (+18%). In total, the CMN specifies that 100 monuments receive more than 000,16 visitors per year, compared to 2022 in 110, and two-thirds of the <> referenced monuments have seen an increase in their attendance.
Note the spectacular increases of lesser-known monuments such as the castle of Fougères-sur-Bièvre (Loir-et-Cher), 30,726 visitors, an increase of 95%, Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye in Poissy (Yvelines), with 36,545 visitors and an increase of 58%, or the castle of La Motte-Tilly (Aube) and its 19,020 visitors (+56%).
While the absence of the Eiffel Tower may seem surprising, it can be explained by the fact that the Iron Lady is managed by a private company, the Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, and is therefore not part of the national monuments. In 2022, it attracted nearly 6 million visitors. The Palace of Versailles is also one of the notable absentees from this list.
