Anyone planning their vacation for the New Year should find out more about safety risks.

A company awards five categories.

Bremen – Ukraine, Iran, Israel and almost all of North Africa: All of these travel destinations pose a “very high risk” in the new year 2024.

The German company A3M, based in Hamburg and Tübingen, has also created a so-called risk map for the new year, which analyzes the risk potential in all countries around the world.

Anyone planning their trips for the new year should definitely check whether their destination is at high risk.

Vacation 2024: These are the safest travel destinations for tourists

In order to be able to compare the countries, the company used entry and exit, transport in the country (air transport, public transport, taxis, cars and other means of transport) as criteria.

In addition, infrastructure, health, risk of infection, natural hazards and environment, safety were highlighted, among other things.

Countries marked in dark red, such as those mentioned above, should therefore only be visited with extreme caution.

Due to the war in Ukraine and the war in Israel, it is understandable that experts advise against traveling to these countries.

But the highest warning level also applies in large regions outside of the war zones.

These include the African countries Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The “Risk Map” from A3M shows which travel countries pose which risks in 2024.

Holiday 2024: Dark red warning level also for Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti

A3M also warns of some countries with the highest intensity in the Middle to Far East.

In addition to Israel, these include Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We also strongly advise against traveling to Myanmar.

In addition, in Latin America, crisis-ridden Venezuela lights up dark red, as do parts of Colombia and Haiti.

The rule for all of these countries is that they can only be traveled to with significant restrictions or not at all.

“Comprehensive precautions” must be taken before the trip, such as a security concept.

Traveling to countries marked in orange is also “associated with high risks”.

Examples of such countries include the aggressor countries Russia and Belarus, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, many African and Central American countries as well as parts of Indonesia and Mexico.

In some of these countries the situation is also extremely tense and special security measures are necessary.

Holiday risks 2024: “Yellow level” for China, India and Thailand

The first level of countries that can be traveled to without extensive preparation is the yellow level.

However, there is also an “increased risk” here because violent crime, health risks or prolonged violent protests can also occur here.

Almost all countries in South America, the rest of Mexico, the south and many coastal regions of Africa as well as the Republic of Moldova, Turkey and large parts of Asia can be found here, from Kazakhstan to India, China and the holiday destination Thailand, which is very popular with tourists.

Germany is no longer one of the safest travel destinations: Same security level as Botswana

Low risk only applies to “green” areas that can be traveled to with few restrictions, although country-specific risks must be taken into account.

Almost all of Europe can be assigned to this level, as well as the USA, Cuba, Argentina, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, some Gulf states, Malaysia, Brunei and the African countries of Namibia, Botswana and Morocco.

Interesting: Germany also belongs to this category, unlike last year 2023. At that time, the Federal Republic was still classified under the “dark green”, the safest category.

High-risk countries: have your say.

Safest travel countries in the world in 2024: Canada, Norway, Switzerland and Co.

This year, too, this is reserved for the safest travel countries, which Germany is apparently no longer one of.

Other than Switzerland, Luxembourg, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark (including Greenland), the Faroe Islands and Canada.

According to the assessment, only these eight countries can be traveled to “without restrictions”; there is “very low risk” here.

For example, strikes here rarely affect elementary services, and violent protests are rare and/or localized.

Like Germany, Slovakia was also classified as dark green last year.

A variety of factors therefore play a role in the risk classifications of countries and regions.

Countries and regions for which travelers should definitely inform themselves about country-specific risks before a trip are marked using the signal colors orange and red.

In principle, however, relevant information is also stored in countries with lower risks for travelers.

The general rule is: Before going on vacation, you should find out thoroughly about the security risks in the respective country and take appropriate precautions.

The Federal Foreign Office also provides detailed information about risks in all countries.
