, The Three Musketeers: animation and family films drove French cinema abroad in 2023, according to preliminary figures published Tuesday by Unifrance.
In total, French films had 37.4 million admissions to theaters abroad last year.
This is much better than the previous year (+38.5%) but remains very far from the levels reached before Covid, where they could sometimes exceed 100 million admissions.
Miraculous: The Film
completely crushed the competition, with 7.15 million admissions.
The film based on the globally successful animated series has many more admissions abroad than in France itself (1.6 million).
Half were recorded in Russia, a country that has become the leading export market for French cinema in terms of number of admissions.
The sector is not affected by the sanctions put in place after the start of the war in Ukraine, but competition from major American studios, which no longer release their films there, has disappeared.
In second position according to the organization responsible for promoting French cinema abroad,
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom
(2.74 million spectators), then the animated film
Pattie and the Wrath of Poseidon
(1 .76 million entries).
The fascination with the gold of Versailles and the presence of Johnny Depp benefited

(4th with 1.72 million admissions), ahead of the first part of The
Three Musketeers
(1.65 million admissions) and the prize of gold at Cannes
