The child allowance is paid in addition to child benefit and is aimed at low-income families.

Up to 292 euros per month and child are possible.

Families with low incomes can receive a little more support from the state in the new year: As of January 1, 2024, the child allowance has been increased to up to 292 euros per month and child.

Previously it was up to 250 euros.

Who is entitled to the child allowance?

In order to claim the child allowance, the following requirements, among others, must be met, as the consumer advice center states:

  • You are a single parent and earn at least 600 euros gross per month.

  • With a partner you can be entitled to a gross income of 900 euros or more.

  • The child must live in your household.

  • The child must be younger than 25 years.

  • You receive child benefit.

  • Your income, together with the child allowance and, if applicable, housing benefit, must also be high enough to cover your living expenses.

The Federal Employment Agency offers help with an initial assessment of whether you are entitled to child allowance in individual cases on its website with the so-called

KiZ-Lotsen (KiZ stands for child supplement).

Where can you apply for the child allowance?

Child allowance and child benefit are paid out together.

However, the application for the child allowance must be submitted separately to the family fund.

“You can also do this online,” explains the consumer advice center in the message (as of January 8th) on its website.

What do I have to include with the application for child allowance?

  • Application form for the child allowance with attachments

  • Certificate of earnings from the employer

  • Proof of income such as pension, parental allowance or BAföG notification

  • If necessary, proof of maintenance (e.g. bank statements)

  • If applicable, housing benefit notice

  • Current proof of accommodation costs (e.g. rental certificate)

How much assets are allowed for child allowance?

“You will not receive a child allowance if your assets are too high,” says the consumer advice center.

“The asset exemption limit is 55,000 euros for two people in the household and 15,000 euros for each additional household member.”

Can you get child allowance and housing benefit at the same time?

The consumer advice center emphasizes that it is possible to receive housing benefit and child allowance at the same time.

“Applying for housing benefit therefore often makes sense.” Receiving citizen’s benefit leads to exclusion from the child allowance.
