The International Comics Festival, which opens from this Thursday, is traditionally an opportunity to feel the pulse of the sector.
Since 2017, the news has been excellent.
The market showed constant increases year after year: + 2.5% in 2018, + 11% in 2019, + 9% in 2020. With a climax in 2021: an increase of 60% in sales, or 85 million euros. albums sold, and a turnover of 890 million euros.
A waking dream for publishers… which is coming to an end.

Because the year benefited from two locomotives which limited the damage: a new “Asterix” and the rebirth of Gaston Lagaffe, two albums at the top of the top 10 best-selling books, all categories combined.
Without them, the market drop would have reached 14% in volume and 7% in turnover.
