Contrary to the position of the Treasury:
today (Wednesday) the planned cut in the public libraries was cancelled.
As first published in Israel Hayom, in the official document issued by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry requested to cut 59 million NIS from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, of which 25 million NIS from the budget of public libraries.
The public libraries' budget currently stands at 85 million shekels per year, by virtue of the Public Libraries Law, so cutting 25 million shekels from the budget means closing the oxygen tap for the libraries.

Communications Minister Dr. Shlomo Karai, a member of the Committee of Ministers for Legislation, said after the cancellation of the cut: "Together with my members of the Committee of Ministers for Legislation, we have currently removed from the chapter the painful cut of 30% (25 out of 85 million) that the Treasury requested to cut in public libraries. If it comes back to the discussion again , it will only be after a cross-sectional examination, and in such a way that the cut will be minimal and other sources will be found to complete it. I thank the members of the committee chairman, Minister Yariv Levin, for his firm stand in the interest of the public in general and the residents of the periphery in particular."
