Aldi is not only available in Germany - the discounter is also making a name for itself abroad.

The company already has 7 million customers in a holiday destination and is now expanding further.

Madrid – Aldi is a popular discount store in Germany and is best known for its low prices.

But the supermarket doesn't only exist in this country, the company has also expanded into other countries and would like to continue to do so.

This is also the case in Spain.

Aldi Nord was able to boast 435 stores here by the end of 2023.

This number will increase again this year.

Aldi Nord wants to expand further in the popular holiday destination and is planning around 50 new branches.

Aldi Nord expansion into holiday destinations: more than half in strategic areas

This is evident from the Spanish Aldi website.

Accordingly, the focus is primarily on Aldi's strategic areas in Spain.

More than half of the planned expansions will take place in Andalusia, Catalonia, as well as in the autonomous communities of Madrid and Valencia.

There are also new openings in the north of the country in the Basque Country, Galicia, Cantabria, Castile and León.

In addition, growth in Extremadura, Murcia and the Balearic Islands is to be strengthened.

Aldi Nord in Spain: 7 million customers

At the end of 2023, there were a total of 435 Spanish Aldi stores with a sales area of 480,000 square meters.

An increase of eleven percent compared to the previous year.

As early as 2023, the chain expanded to include 46 new branches in Spain.

The number of customers has also grown significantly in the last three years.

The number has increased by 33 percent, to 7 million customers.

A new logistics center is also scheduled to be built in the first months of 2024.

This will measure 40,000 square meters and will be located in Miranda de Ebro, in Burgos, and will logistically complement the new branches in the north of the country.

CEO of Aldi Spain, Valentín Lumbreras, explains: “We continue to be committed to the growth of ALDI in Spain.

Years ago we launched an ambitious expansion plan, which we are maintaining and which allows us to continuously and sustainably increase our presence in Spain.

In 2024, we will continue to create stable, high-quality jobs across the country.”

Aldi only in Germany?

Discounters represented in numerous countries

Spain is not the only country where Aldi is represented.

  • Aldi Süd abroad: Austria, USA, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, Slovenia, China, Hungary, Italy (Source: Aldi Süd)

But Aldi is not the only German supermarket that has also been able to prove itself abroad.

The pioneer in this business is probably Lidl.

But what do people from other countries actually think of supermarkets in Germany?

An American couple enters a German Lidl for the first time and is particularly impressed by a gadget.
