Whether with currywurst or a burger: fries are one of the most popular side dishes.

Ökotest looked at the quality of frozen fries.

There is a warning about a brand.

Hamm - You can find them almost everywhere: in restaurants they are offered as a side dish to meat and fish, snack bars sometimes offer gourmet versions with different sauces, special herbs and lots of cheese.

French fries are an integral part of the German plate.

And even when you cook your own food, the fried potato sticks often end up on your plate.

However, only a few people bother to prepare potatoes fresh and chop them into small pieces and put them in the deep fryer.

Instead, many people rely on frozen fries.

Most consumers will be aware that this is not necessarily healthy.

But is consumption possibly even harmful to health?

Öko-Test looked at various fries from the freezer,

Ökotest tests frozen fries: One brand contains harmful substances

And the result is impressive: out of 20 products in the test report, only one offer is really negative.

The experts at Öko-Test discovered chlorpropham

in Norma's

Potato Master French Fries during laboratory analysis.

The substance is considered carcinogenic and has been classified as particularly worrisome by the Pesticide Action Network.

So nothing you would necessarily want to have in your fries.

Somehow fries always work.

But you should stay away from one brand.

In addition, a cadmium content was detected that exceeded the tolerable weekly intake of a person weighing 60 kilograms by over 50 percent.

Cadmium can accumulate in the liver and kidneys and cause long-term damage to the organs.

For these laboratory results, the product from Norma was penalized with the grade “defective”.

This makes it all the more pleasing to look at the other frozen fries in the test.

In 16 cases, the testers gave the highest grade of “very good”, including for the organic versions of the large supermarket chains Edeka and Rewe.

And the three remaining products were able to get the rating “good”.

This surprises even the experts: “The fact that we had nothing to complain about in 19 out of 20 French fries under the “ingredients” test result is an astonishing result.”

Frozen fries impress in the Ökotest: the majority receive a grade of “very good”

The “very good” frozen fries include:

Even if that doesn't mean that fries should end up on the plate every day: the almost consistently good to very good test results for the frozen fries should ease the conscience of many people when things have to be done quickly and the fried potato sticks are in Landing in the oven.

The thing with the Nutri-Score

Fries are popular.

But as with so many popular dishes, the same applies here: There is another way to be healthy.

Many consumers are led on the wrong track by the Nutri-Score information on the bag of fries when they reach into the refrigerated section.

The green version of the seal can be seen on many products.

And anything that's green can't be that unhealthy.

Or?

Unfortunately, none: “The Nutri-Score only makes the nutritional values comparable within a product category - i.e. shows whether brand A of fries has a better nutritional composition than brand B,” writes Öko-Test.

“However, it does not provide any information about whether a food is inherently healthy or unhealthy.”

“There is nothing wrong with occasionally enjoying a delicious portion of fries,” writes the magazine.

“The manufacturers seem to have gotten the problems with acrylamide and fat pollutants under control, which used to regularly make headlines with potato sticks that were pre-fried in oil and heated again at high temperatures before consumption.”

Margarine wasn't as good as fries in the test.

Ökotest came to a catastrophic result.

Well-known names in particular have been deleted.

In a test report, an oat milk was again given the grade “poor” – because of mold.
