It depends on the age and the collective irony of the moment.
Social media dictates trends and is the vehicle that decrees the success of the coolest and most ironic disguise of the year.

Children are instead responsible for the costumes of their favorite characters: in the lead this year are the Barbie costumes, classic version or vintage Cowgirl (the western style of the actress Margot Robbie in the blockbuster film Barbie, now released on streaming platforms ) rocketed to the top of sales at the moment on the most popular e-commerce platform, Amazon.
On the 'celebrities' front, they follow, and often without gender differences, favorite characters from films or TV series such as the protagonists of 'Stranger Things', Wednesday of the Addams Family, Willy Wonka and Harry Potter.
For babies we focus on classic costumes of cute animals, from lions to penguins but also dinosaurs and flowers.
Little Red Riding Hood has also resisted for many years.
The Minnie Mouse costume for little girls with red bodice and skirt and headband with mouse ears (by Lito Angels) is very popular (in second place among the best sellers in the 'games' section on Amazon).
This is followed by the classic costumes of fairy tale characters such as the Disney princesses, from Elsa to Snow White, or as bunny and fairy, from Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter (version for babies and girls).

In the Toys centers (on the toyscenter.it website you can browse the complete catalog of costumes) on the peninsula there is no shortage of accessories to transform into policemen, fairies, clowns or unicorns, as well as irresistible butterfly wings and sets of assorted moustaches.
Finally, tricks suitable for the skin of little ones.
FAO Schwarz, with its sole headquarters for Italy in Milan, has also organized a section dedicated to Carnival costumes: ranging from eye masks to the cheapest wigs up to the most expensive accessory, Thor's Stormbreaker electronic ax (inspired to Avengers: Endgame) which costs 220 euros.
Also worth mentioning is the vast world of cutting and sewing: from the simplest jobs to the most original and difficult to create costumes, the world of seamstresses and enthusiasts is at work, also thanks to the video tutorials that crowd the web and the pins of Pinterest full of ideas and suggestions for cheap and fun DIY costumes.
On Wallapop, the most searched for costumes for children are Harry Potter and the spotted costumes from 101 Dalmatians, and the Venetian costumes for adults.
For those who have a costume dedicated to these characters, which they no longer use, they can put it up for sale on the second-hand platform.
Cartoon lovers, from timeless classics to the most recent, will find various Carnival costumes.
An example of this is the dresses of Disney princesses.
For those with a more nerdy soul, fans of sagas and magic, Star Wars themed costumes cannot be missing.
For the more shy ones who just need to wear a mask to hide their face and arouse mystery among the crowd, the most classic ones are available on the platform, such as those of Harlequin and the particular ones typical of Venice, but also those dedicated to certain characters such as Zorro .

In Venice the year is dedicated to Marco Polo, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death.

Other famous carnivals are in Rio De Janeiro obviously but also closer: in the Canary Islands which offer a mix of folklore events to the rhythm of Latin music for the carnival in its local version, with the rhythms of the batucada.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma lead with the most well-known events, but all islands organize parties.
