The Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, approved the bill establishing the Museum of Remembrance with the aim of preserving and renewing the memory of the tragedy of the Italians and of all the victims of the foibe, of the exodus from their lands of the Istrians, Fiumes and Dalmatians.

The Museum will be based in Rome and will also have to "reconstruct and narrate the history of the Italians of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia and of the more complex story of the eastern Italian border".

"The creation of the Museum is a historical duty towards the Istrian, Fiume and Dalmatian exiles who suffered Tito's communist dictatorship. These tragedies must not be forgotten. They are an important part of Italian history and must be known and understood by the new generations" commented the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

For its institution, the approved bill provides for a total of 8 million euros to be used (3 in 2024, 3 in 2025 and 2 in 2026) and an expense of 50 thousand euros per year is expected for its operation.

To manage the Museum, a Foundation will be set up by the Ministry of Culture, owned not only by the MIC, but also by the Lazio Region and other public and private entities.

Both the funds for the establishment of the Museum and those for its operation will be found among the reserve and special funds, of the Funds to be distributed mission, of the MEF forecast, partly also using the provision foreseen for the Mic.
