Italy, in the 2022-2023 season, recorded a consumption of 45,000 tonnes of avocado, equivalent to 0.8 kilos per capita.
This was announced by the World Avocado Organization (WAO).
Leading the avo-mania is France, where 150,000 tonnes were shipped during the 2022/23 season.
Germany and the United Kingdom follow with 110,000 tonnes each and Scandinavia with 60,000 tonnes.
Analyzing the results of per capita consumption, France appears to be the European country that consumes the most avocados, with 2.3 kg per person in 2022/23, followed by Scandinavia with 2.2 kg.
Italians, on average, consumed around 0.8 kg per capita while last year the average was around 0.7 kg.
Other increases can be seen in countries such as France and the United Kingdom (1.6 kg in 2022-23).
The main consumers in key markets are Millennials and Generation Z, who love - analysts highlight - avocados for "their health benefits and great flavor".
Peru is the largest avocado supplier in Europe, with 331,767 tonnes arriving in the 2022/23 season.
In second place Colombia with 90,880 tonnes, followed by Chile with 60,011 tonnes, Kenya with 58,657 tonnes and South Africa in fifth place with 57,671 tonnes.
Mexico is the world's leading exporter of avocados but less than 5% goes to Europe, while 90% goes to the United States.
