A defibrillator within reach of a drone can make a difference in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.
This is demonstrated by the first test of the SEUAM (Sanitary Emergency Urban Air Mobility) experimental project of SIS 118 which took flight in Taranto, in the Sant'Eligio pier, on the occasion of a simulated event.
Under the telephone guidance of the operators of the 118 Operations Centre, an occasional witness on site initially carried out the cardiac massage and then helped the patient using the defibrillator carried by a drone carried, in real time, by specialized operators.
"Drastically reduce the time needed to provide assistance to the victim of a sudden cardiac arrest, ensuring the start of chest compressions within the first 3 minutes of onset and the delivery of the electric shock delivered by the defibrillator, if necessary, within the first 5 minutes - declares Mario Balzanelli, National President of SIS 118, inventor and project leader of the experimentation - makes the difference between life and death, because it allows us to save, without neurological outcomes, at least 40% of these subjects who would otherwise be destined to certain death".
The meaning of the project, carried out together with the technical partner Caltec, an aerospace consortium from Campania, "is to significantly reduce avoidable deaths by bringing, through the use of hyper-fast drones remotely controlled by the 118 Operations Centers - continues Balzanelli - life-saving equipment, such as the defibrillator semi-automatic, but also drugs, blood and blood products. Here in Taranto we have begun to test the essential bases of the operational path with the essential movements of integration between the entry into action of the first responders, the direction of the 118 Operations Center, with the guidance of remote control for the immediate activation of resuscitation and defibrillation procedures. The next flight test of the Apteron drone is scheduled for Altomonte on March 17th".
A project which for Aquilino Carlo Villano, Sole Director of Caltec, is also "a social mission, in which extremely important scientific values are combined with the entrepreneurial ability to bring concrete results of great value for the community."
