The ROS carabinieri arrested the architect Massimo Gentile and the radiologist technician of the Mazara del Vallo hospital Cosimo Leone for mafia association and Leonardo Gulotta for external complicity in mafia association: the three allowed the boss to have a normal life for about ten years, providing him with identity.
The investigation was coordinated by the Palermo prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia, the deputy Paolo Guido and the prosecutors GianlucaDe Leo and Piero Padova.
Since the capture of the boss, which took place on 16 January 2023, 14 people accused of having helped the wanted mafia boss have ended up in handcuffs.
Four have already been convicted.
Even today, says the Palermo prosecutor's office, a total silence "envelops like a very thick fog everything that existed around the figure" of the boss, "his contacts, his movements and the relationships he established during the long years of clandestinity".
According to the investigations, Gentile - who lives in Limbiate, in the province of Monza and holds an administrative position in the Municipality - would have given up his identity several times between 2007 and 2017, thus allowing him to purchase a Fiat 500 and a BMW motorbike, to take out insurance on the two means, to carry out banking operations.
Leone would have instead guaranteed the boss, among other things, that he would safely have a CT scan of his chest and abdomen done in November 2020 and that he had given him a confidential mobile phone during his hospitalization in Mazara del Vallo hospital.
Finally, Gulotta would have made his telephone number available.
