If you have an eye for details, clean borders of beds and lawns are a treat for the eyes. And with these instructions you can do this without a lot of work.

Many people feel most comfortable in a tidy garden. This does not exclude a gardener who is close to nature, but rather shows a preference for clear lines and an appreciation with which one rewards oneself for the garden care and work done. The difference between a bed border full of weeds and a cleanly cut lawn edge is definitely obvious - it's the best thing to do. And every beginner can do it without much effort.

Step by step to clean bed and lawn edges

Architect Ray Baker revealed to

magazine how to create a clear demarcation between flower beds and lawn edges in just a few steps . Here are the instructions:

1. Create an edge

The first step is to cut the edge. When creating a new bed, it is best to first mark the desired lines with a garden hose or a rope. If you want to beautify an existing bed, you can get started right away. There are two methods for this:

  • Method 1: Use a spade or a (half-moon) edger to work along the line you set. When cornering, you have to be careful while moving to keep the line smooth.

  • Method 2: Advanced users can use a lawn edger, which cuts an even yet flexible line into the ground thanks to its wheels.

2: Remove the sod

Once you have determined your border, deepen it with a spade to ten to 15 centimeters so that the edge forms a 90 degree angle if possible. This also applies to the inside of the bed when you create a new one. You can easily remove the loosened turf.

3. Cleaning the edge

Place a pair of scissors vertically on the trench wall and cut off the remaining blades of grass from the edge. Be careful not to hold the scissors horizontally, otherwise the right angle of the edge will easily be ruined. This step can be repeated several times over the course of the garden season to keep the edges straight.

4. Mulch the bed

Apply a layer of mulch about five centimeters thick to the bed. This not only suppresses weeds, but also defines the edge well in terms of color. It's best to mulch right up to the edge of the lawn to create a gentle slope from the edge to the bed - but that's a matter of taste.
