If your spouse or life partner dies, you are entitled to a widow's pension. But how much can you earn extra to avoid a pension cut?
Bremen – The death of a loved one can threaten your own economic existence. Therefore, surviving dependents are entitled to a widow's or widower's pension. However, some requirements must be met. In addition, the income may be taken into account under certain circumstances. But what about a mini-job?
Widow's pension: Is the mini-job taken into account?
Who gets how much pension depends on various factors, such as the age, time of marriage or registered civil partnership and the income of the deceased. There is a particular lack of clarity regarding additional earnings, which can influence the amount of the pension - at least above a certain allowance.
According to the German Pension Insurance, all income from professional activity, including that from a mini-job, is taken into account. The normal old-age pension is also included. However, there are exceptions for so-called needs-based benefits such as citizen's benefit or basic security in old age as well as for income from state-funded pension contracts.
But what does that mean? The widow's pension is reduced by an amount that is made up of the sum of all income to be taken into account and must necessarily be above a certain exemption amount. The allowance is tied to the current pension value and corresponds to 26.4 times the current pension value, which is currently 37.60 euros.
Widow's pension and mini-job: This is how high the allowance is currently
The allowance used to be different in the old and new federal states, but is now 992.64 euros nationwide. If the spouses have children together, the allowance increases. 40 percent of the income above the exemption amount is taken into account. In concrete terms, this means: For every euro of net income above the tax-free allowance, 40 cents are credited and deducted accordingly from the widow's pension. So anyone who has a net income that exceeds the exemption amount by 1,000 euros will receive 400 euros less widow's pension.
