A healthy garden requires care. This also includes fertilizing the lawn. What is important is how you use which lawn fertilizer over the course of the year.

Some soils do not provide enough nutrients to support vigorously growing plants - this also applies to your lawn. A little fertilizer can help here. But sometimes lawn fertilizer does more harm than good. We have summarized when you should and should not fertilize your lawn.

Ideally, you should check the pH of your soil regularly. When you fertilize, you lower or increase the pH value of the soil. If it becomes too acidic or too alkaline, your lawn could be damaged. That's why you should take countermeasures beforehand.

  • Ideal pH value: between 5.5 and 6.5

  • Measure if the pH value is too high: apply acidic nitrogen fertilizer (promotional link).

  • Measure if the pH value is too low: Use lawn lime

As a reminder: low pH values are acidic, high pH values are alkaline. It is best to check the soil regularly with a pH test from the hardware store. In some cases, so-called indicator plants also indicate what condition your soil is in. Also, loosen your lawn (scarify) and mow the grass before applying fertilizer.

Fertilizing your lawn: when to use which fertilizer?

In spring (March/April) you want to encourage your lawn to grow. First wait for constant temperatures. The outside temperature should be at least five degrees. If this is the case, use nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer. Ideally, you should use an organic product - this is more environmentally friendly than mineral alternatives. Important: Once you have applied the fertilizer, water your garden. This is how the nutrients find their way into the soil.

The second fertilizer application takes place in summer. Feel free to use the material from spring. Finally, a potassium-based fertilizer follows in the fall: potassium strengthens the cells of the grass blades. This prepares your lawn for low temperatures and frost. Spring products are better left in the cupboard. The most important information summarized at a glance:

  • Mow and scarify the lawn before fertilizing.

  • Fertilize once in spring and summer (with a nitrogen emphasis).

  • Fertilize once in autumn (potassium).

  • Follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions.

In what weather do you fertilize? This is what you should pay attention to

The soil should not be too dry when you fertilize your lawn. Therefore, a cloudy day is more suitable than a sunny one. It's best to use the morning. Then the ground is still a little damp from the dew.
