The rules for job seekers could soon change. On TF1 this Wednesday, Gabriel Attal called for a new "global" reform of unemployment insurance which would reduce the duration of compensation for the unemployed, at a time when social spending is in the executive's sights to fill the deficit which has slipped last year.
Gabriel Attal asked his Minister of Labor Catherine Vautrin “to prepare new negotiations” with the social partners on unemployment insurance, putting forward among the options a reduction in the duration of compensation from 18 to 12 months maximum. A proposal that the union organizations immediately deemed “unacceptable”.
Other avenues mentioned: the possibility of affecting the minimum time worked to benefit from unemployment, or of acting on the “level” of compensation.
Gabriel Attal was speaking after having gathered in Matignon in the morning a government seminar resembling a Council of Ministers devoted to work, pleading in particular for the “de-emcardization” of the country.
In this regard, the head of government wishes to “review the system of reductions in employer contributions” so that this provides “more incentive to increase” low wages. A mission has already been entrusted in this sense to two economists (Antoine Bozio and Étienne Wasmer) who will submit their work “in June”.

While a new unemployment insurance agreement, negotiated in the fall by trade unions and employers' organizations, should be validated shortly by the government, the idea of immediately putting the work back on the job has sparked opposition, starting with Marine Le Pen.
The leader of the RN deputies denounced “a scam which has only one goal: to pick the pockets of the French to replenish the State accounts which are in deficit because of the incompetence of the Government”.
“In 2024 unemployment insurance will be in surplus by 3 billion euros,” noted the boss of LR deputies Olivier Marleix, crying about “smoke” while on “the lifestyle of the State” , the government is proposing “nothing”. Because the government is looking for savings after the public deficit skidded to 5.5% of GDP in 2023, according to INSEE. Or 15.8 billion euros more than the government's forecasts, which excludes increasing taxes.
