There is a lot to do in the garden in spring. Now it's time to weed, pluck and cut. You need a good pair of scissors to cut it. But which one performs best?

Kassel – ARD did the secateurs test in the program “Servicezeit”. Because cutting trees, bushes and plants requires the right tools. Scissors ranging from cheap to expensive were tested; they are exclusively bypass shears that are intended to create branches up to 22 millimeters in diameter. What was important to the testers was how well the scissors fit in the hand and whether they are suitable for large and smaller hands. They also wanted to know how well the scissors are suitable for different types of wood (blackberries, linden trees, fruit trees) and whether they can be used to make smooth cuts without much effort. Cutting should also be possible without any problems and without injuring your hand.

The right tools are also important in the garden. A distinction is made between anvil and bypass shears; in the latter, two metal blades push past each other. With the anvil variant, the blades meet directly. If you want to cut living wood, you should use bypass scissors, because they can be used to cut the wood without damaging it and it will not be crushed during the cut, according to the tip at

. Hobby gardeners and garden enthusiasts can still do this in March so that the garden wakes up from hibernation. And from April it's time to protect against pests, sow and prune.

These bypass models have been tested:

  • Gardena scissors (price: 18.99 euros)

  • Gardol scissors, Bauhaus' own brand (price: 20.95 euros)

  • Wolf Garten scissors (price 24.99 euros)

  • Fiskars scissors (price: 36.99 euros)

  • Löwe Precision Scissors (Price: 45 euros)

The result after 100 woodcuts: The Lion Scissors clearly wins the race. It fits well in the hand, is also very suitable for different types of wood and is easy to use. This is followed by the models from Gardena and the Gardol Bauhaus scissors. The scissors from Bauhaus were unable to convince the testers, especially when cutting soft material. The scissors from Wolf Garten and Fiskars are in the middle of the field. The testers found the risk of injury when cutting fruit wood was too great.

Garden shears in the ARD test: It's best to test the shears yourself in stores before buying

Nobody wants to bruise their thumb while gardening, have the blade slip on the wood, or end up injuring the plant itself while cutting it. And anyone who uses hedge trimmers in the garden should also be careful. However, for a significantly different reason.
