The classic Danube wave never goes out of style. A cake that was created from grandma's yellowed recipe collection. This makes the classic particularly fluffy.

The Donauwelle, a piece of baking tradition, is reminiscent of grandma's kitchen, where it was prepared according to an old, tried and tested recipe. Taken from the yellowed pages of her extensive cake tome, it promises a perfect mix of moist sponge cake, sweet cherries, creamy buttercream and glossy chocolate icing.

With its unmistakable wave pattern, the Danube Wave is not only a visual highlight, but also a taste experience. A classic cake that is just as suitable for special occasions as it is for a cozy coffee hour on Sunday.

And because grandmas are usually not only good at baking, but also at cooking, Simply Tasty offers all sorts of dishes that bring back childhood memories from grandma's kitchen, such as the recipe for light and airy potato dumplings, traditional red cabbage with apples or hearty potato soup with sausages.

Preparation is so easy:

  • Preheat oven to 160 °C fan oven.

  • For the light cake batter:

Beat the butter and sugar with a hand mixer. Add eggs and beat until fluffy. Finally stir in the flour, baking powder and milk. Spread about half of the cake batter in a round springform pan (diameter 26 cm).

  • For the dark cake batter:

Mix the remaining cake batter with milk and baking cocoa in the same bowl. Add the light dough to the baking pan and distribute the morello cherries evenly on top.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove and let cool completely.

  • For the buttercream:

In the meantime, prepare the pudding with milk, pudding powder and sugar according to the package instructions. Let cool at room temperature. Beat the butter for a few minutes until light and creamy. Gradually add the cooled pudding and stir in.

  • Pour the buttercream onto the cooled cake and chill for two hours.

  • For the glaze:

Finally, melt the dark chocolate with the coconut oil in a saucepan. Pour the chocolate icing onto the cooled cake, use a fork to create a wave pattern in the chocolate and chill again for 30 minutes.

  • Serve and enjoy with coffee or tea.
