Washington (CNN) - Todd Palin filed for divorce from Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska and a Republican candidate for vice presidency in 2008, after 31 years of marriage.

In a document presented Friday at the Superior Court in Anchorage, Alaska, Todd Palin cites a "temperament incompatibility" in his marriage to Sarah Palin "in such a way that they find it impossible to continue living together as husband and wife." The divorce filing and court records only use initials to refer to the couple, with Todd Mitchell Palin on the list as TMP and Sarah Louise Palin only identified as SLP.

Neither Sarah Palin nor Todd Palin nor her lawyer has responded to CNN's requests for comment. The divorce filing was first reported by Alaskan blogger Craig Medred.

The presentation of the document on Friday includes an affidavit of custody jurisdiction of the youngest child of the family, who is 11 years old. The affidavit is a standard divorce form in Alaska that involves underage children that includes information about children who will participate in custody proceedings.

Palin served as governor of Alaska from 2006 to 2009 and stood out nationally in the summer of 2008, when the late Senator John McCain elected her to be his running mate in the presidential race, which he would eventually lose to Barack Obama.

The Palin family has faced remarkable, and sometimes unflattering, attention in subsequent years. Bristol Palin appeared on MTV's "Teen Mom OG" last year - she was pregnant during her mother's vice-presidential campaign when she was 17 - but she announced her departure from the program in April and said: "It took my peace."

In 2018, the Palin's eldest son, Track Palin, 30, was arrested on charges of domestic violence, of which he pleaded not guilty. That case is ongoing. He had previously pleaded guilty to criminal raid on a home after being accused of breaking into his parents' house and assaulting Todd Palin.

The time that has elapsed since Sarah Palin was governor has been marked largely by a continuous flow of book publications and cable news appearances. She said in 2015 that she was "seriously interested" in running for president, but finally decided not to compete for the White House.
