(CNN Spanish) - Mexican singer José José, who died on September 28, is remembered for being one of the most important voices of romantic Spanish music of the 70s and 80s.

The battles he gave during his life were not easy, as he recognized in several interviews throughout his life, including in his own songs, which earned him the title of 'The prince of the song'.

José José was born in Mexico City in 1947 and was destined to enter the music industry. He grew up surrounded by music, since his father was a tenor of the National Opera of Mexico and his mother was a professional pianist.

He began his career singing jazz and bossa nova, but rose to fame in 1970 when he sang “El Triste” at the Latin Song Festival. He did not win the prestigious singing contest, but his performance was so memorable that Latin American fans considered him the true winner.

1. “I became a patient of alcoholism”

In 1993, the Mexican singer gave a heartfelt interview in which he recognized his problems with alcoholism. At that time there was talk of the death of the interpreter because there was no news of him for several months. In an interview with Mexican journalist Ricardo Rocha, the singer said he had been in a specialized alcoholism recovery clinic in the United States for 32 days.

“I became sick with alcoholism,” José José said in that interview. “For many years I have suffered from this disease and I have fought daily against it… I don't always manage it. It has caused me great pains. ”

"I have suffered it, I insist, for many years, and I have achieved battles, really, out of series against her," the interpreter told Ricardo Rocha in 1993.

2. “I decided to end my existence”

In this same interview with Ricardo Rocha, of 1993, when talking about his alcoholism problems, José José said that because of his emotional problems he had decided to “end” his existence, but that God stopped him because it was not yet his moment.

"I had so many emotional problems that I decided once again to end my existence," said the Mexican singer. José José said that this disease caused him very big problems because he could not manage his emotions.

3. “I am ready to face this new adventure in my life”

In March 2017, the interpreter of “La Nave del Olvido,” “40 y 20,” “Gavilán o Paloma” and “El Triste,” spoke openly about his health in a message to his fans on social networks, and confirmed that He was detected a tumor in the pancreas, but said he was "ready to face this new adventure."

4. “I never felt fear or anything”

José José suffered Lyme disease, facial paralysis and other diseases that led him to lose his voice.

In October 2018, the artist shared an audio on his official Twitter account in which he says he is at home receiving care from his wife Sarita and his daughter.

“I have heard versions that Sarita (her youngest daughter) has kidnapped me. That is not true. Sarita has been taking care of me since I left the hospital, ”José José said in an audio published on social networks, after leaving the hospital.

The artist said at the time that "he had been improving little by little, gaining weight, feeling better and better."

6. “God is superb”

Throughout his life, the artist declared himself a believer and follower of God.
