The topic of the day: Optimistic despite the crisis

The economy is weakening, the coalition in Berlin is apparently just trying to get over time - and elections like last in Thuringia show how dramatically the political landscape in Germany is changing. Reason enough for the Germans to be skeptical and dissatisfied. But: The reality looks obviously different.

Because despite all the negative concomitant circumstances, the German citizens do not seem to be afraid when it comes to their own economic future. This is the result of a representative survey of opinion polling institute Civey for SPIEGEL. More than 80 percent are therefore hardly worried about losing their jobs, 56.3 percent responded with a decisive "No, by no means". And that, even though they are aware of the economic slump.

The Germans are also surprisingly satisfied with their financial situation. 43 percent of respondents said their situation was "good" or even "very good" in a survey by the German Savings Banks and Giro Association. Only 18 percent responded with "bad" or "rather bad".

In the countryside, respondents saw the situation very differently. There, only 31 percent rated their own situation as "good" or "very good". Beyond the cities, people feel more dependent on money.
