Unai Emery replaced Arsene Wenger as Arsenal coach in May 2018.

(CNN) - Unai Emery was fired as an Arsenal coach after achieving the longest winning streak of the club since 1992.

The Spaniard replaced Arsene Wenger in May 2018, but could not change the fortunes of the club during his 18-month period in charge.

The 2-1 loss to Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday meant the seventh consecutive game of the team without a victory and Arsenal has fallen to eighth place in the English Premier League.

In truth, the pressure had increased on the 48-year-old man for weeks with large groups of fans questioning his tactical direction and asking to be fired.

The club said the decision was made "because the results and actions were not at the required level."

"Our sincere thanks to Unai and his colleagues who were relentless in their efforts to bring the club back to competition at the level we all expect and demand," said Arsenal director Josh Kroenke.

"We wish Unai and her team nothing but success in the future."

The former player and current coach of the first team, Freddie Ljungberg, has been asked to take over temporarily while the search for the new coach begins.

The next Arsenal game will be visiting Norwich City on Sunday.
