For the first time in the United States, a group of doctors managed to resuscitate a heart after circulatory death. The medical feat was in charge of surgeons at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. The organ came from an adult donor declared officially dead and whose blood was no longer circulating. The heart was transplanted to a living recipient, in a process known as a donation after circulatory death. Dr. Elmer Huerta, an expert in public health, explains the importance of this procedure.
