The Lebanese President, General Michel Aoun, commissioned the former minister, Hassan Diab, to form the government after obtaining 69 votes in the parliamentary consultations.
Diab pledged in a statement after his meeting with President Aoun and received his decision to assign him to form a government at the level of "the aspirations of the Lebanese to fulfill their demands and reassure them about their future and move the country from a state of imbalance to a state of stability through a realistic reform plan that takes its path to implementation quickly and does not remain a dead letter on paper."
Diab said: "I will work hard to form a government as quickly as possible. The stage is very accurate and sensitive and requires effort. We need national unity that will fortify the country and give impetus to the rescue operation and restore confidence to the Lebanese people in their homeland."
The binding parliamentary consultations conducted by the Lebanese President in the Baabda Palace ended earlier today, and Diab won 69 votes, compared to 13 votes for Nawaf Salam and one vote for Halima Qaqour.
