The minimum wage rises this year in 24 states and 49 states or cities, which is a historical record. But these changes do not affect workers in sectors that depend on tips ( tips , in English), and usually charge much less per hour. In New York there has been a change of enormous importance, but not everyone perceives it as something positive.

And what happens in New York?

The minimum wage for workers who receive tips rose on December 31, from $ 7.50 to $ 12.50 per hour (depending on location, industry, company size and earnings on tips) to between $ 7.50 and $ 12.75 per hour .

But according to an order issued Tuesday by the governor, Andrew Cuomo, at the end of the year there will be 70,000 workers who will go from receiving the minimum wage for those who also earn tips to receive the general minimum wage (ranging between 11.80 and 15 dollars per hour ).

Hairdressers, porters, manicure salons, valet parking lots, cranes and tour guides will be affected, among others. The governor has released a report this week in which he assures that these groups are affected by the confusion and possible theft of wages.

However, workers in restaurants and similar establishments, who preferred to continue with the current system of tips to preserve wages and jobs, will not be affected, according to the NBC chain citing union sources.
