The Customs and Excise Department yesterday (2nd) cracked two cases of drug trafficking by passengers on the same flight at the Hong Kong International Airport, and seized about 4 kg of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about 4 million yuan.
Two male passengers arrived in Hong Kong on the same flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia yesterday. During customs clearance, about 3.2 kilograms of suspected cocaine were found in the hidden compartment of the first male passenger's check-in luggage. In addition, customs officers suspected that another male passenger had hidden drugs in the body and took him to the hospital for examination. The man subsequently expelled about 800 grams of suspected cocaine from his body.
The two persons involved were arrested and have each been charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs. They will appear in Kowloon City Magistracy tomorrow (4th).
The Customs and Excise Department will continue to select passengers from high-risk areas for customs clearance inspections in accordance with the principles of risk management, and will further strengthen inspections on the eve of the Lunar New Year holiday to ensure effective crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking activities.
According to the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious crime. Upon conviction, the maximum penalty is a fine of $ 5 million and life imprisonment.
