Former Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezai threatened (Sunday) that the reaction to the assassination of Quds Force commander Kassem Suleimani would be an attack on Haifa and Israeli military bases. In a speech by Rezai in Tehran, he warned that the reaction against the United States would be severe.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he believed there was "a high likelihood" that Iran would try to hit American soldiers in the Middle East. This was after the Iraqi parliament voted for the removal of US forces from the state. Parliament's decision calls on the government to end all "foreign presence" on Iraqi soil and to hold a monopoly on its weapons. Under the non-binding resolution, the administration will ensure that foreign forces do not use the country's land, air or maritime territory for any reason.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi said the United States has announced to the Baghdad regime that Israel is behind some of the pro-Iranian militia ammunition warehouses last year.

Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei also vowed vengeance for the elimination of those responsible for the Revolutionary Guards operation across the country, as well as for the death of Iraqi Pro-Iranian Shiite leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhands and others. But US President Donald Trump has warned of such a move. He said Washington marked 52 targets in Iran that would be hit "very hard" if Iran hurt American citizens or its interests in the region.

According to a report in the New York Times, the president issued warnings after the US intelligence reported yesterday that Iran's missile units have been on high alert. Other sources said it was unclear whether the regime had decided to disperse the ballistic missiles - the heart of the military establishment - for fear of a U.S. attack or to launch toward targets in the region in response to the Suleiman elimination. Khamenei's senior adviser told CNN that the Iranian response would be to damage military sites.

Responding to US threats, Army Chief Abdel Rahim Muswai said she "did not have the courage" to launch a military confrontation with Iran. "In the event of a dispute, which I do not believe they (the Americans) have the courage to start, it will be clear where the numbers five and two belong," he said of Trump's number. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Jawad Zarif said Trump's threat to attack Iranian cultural sites is a "war crime."
