A 40-year-old foreign man was detained at Hong Kong International Airport on January 3 (Friday) when a suspected pistol was found in his luggage and arrested. Police said that the foreign man was preparing to fly to a foreign country. When he left his luggage at the airline counter, he reported to the airline staff that he had a toy gun, and the airline staff then reported it.
Officers arrived at the scene and found that the man was in possession of a suspected pistol. Initial investigations revealed that the suspected firearm met the definition of "firearm" in section 2 of the Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance, Chapter 238 of the Laws of Hong Kong. Officers removed the suspected firearm for further inspection. The suspect was arrested for "unlicensed possession of firearms" and the case was investigated by the Criminal Intelligence and Support Unit of the airport police district.
The arrested person is temporarily charged with one count of possession of firearms without a license. The case will appear in the West Kowloon Magistracy tomorrow morning (6th).
Police urge passengers not to bring any prohibited items such as firearms. It is an offence for any passenger to carry prohibited items, such as firearms, whether in or out of Hong Kong or transit.
