(CNN) - The Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, managed to enter the country's parliament on Tuesday, even though National Guard soldiers with riot gear tried to stop him.

The images published by the Guaido press team showed that he had been lifted above a large crowd of supporters outside the parliament building. CNN teams in Caracas said at least 10 other opposition lawmakers also tried to block them from entering.

The National Assembly was holding its first session since the controversial elections last weekend. CNN teams inside the building said the parliamentary session was almost empty.

Juan Guaidó managed to enter and now heads to the National Assembly.

Last Sunday, pro-government legislators swore to Luis Parra, a little-known congressman, as president of the National Assembly.

Guaidó, the acting president who has also been recognized as the country's interim president for more than 50 countries, including the United States, said he was denied access to the chamber on Sunday and there was no quorum to vote. Guaidó and other legislators held parallel elections at the headquarters of the newspaper "El Nacional" and Guaidó was re-elected.
