End of the MACCIH: history announced? 5:22

(CNN Spanish) - Days after representatives of the Honduran government and the Organization of American States failed to reach an agreement to renew the mission against corruption and impunity of the international organization in the country, President Juan Orlando Hernández announced on Tuesday that the Government will create its own system to strengthen transparency.

“What are we going to base that system on? In strengthening institutions and that means strengthening the rule of law, ”said Hernandez in a press conference and added that another important pillar will be the participation of citizens and international support.

Some sectors of the opposition have criticized Hernández for not having renewed the agreement for the creation of the Mission to Support Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) that expired last Sunday. The Congress of that country had recommended to the Executive not to continue with the agreement, they argued that the work of the MACCIH officials was outside the agreement signed in January 2016.

In its years of operation, the MACCIH accused 133 people in court in court of 14 cases. Accusations against deputies and ex-deputies for alleged corruption offenses of which everyone has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him are ongoing.

According to a statement published on Friday, November 17, the Government says it proposed to the OAS "the construction of a new comprehensive system of transparency and the fight against corruption and impunity and strengthening of the rule of law." But he argues that the initiative did not gain the support of the agency.

The OAS, for its part, explained that “it is essential in the Honduran case that the present cooperation mechanism that constitutes the MACCIH continue to have a component to support the investigative capacities and activities of the Public Ministry. Unfortunately, the position of the Government of Honduras has been that of not accompanying this proposal, which has made it impossible to renew the Mission. ”
